Being grateful - 20120605

I am grateful for Pinterest.

Okay, back to pinning.

Being grateful - 20120603

I am grateful for unusual sales.

I like going to sales where you find stuff you wouldn't usually find elsewhere. Like garage sales. Or antique sales. Or hotel sales.

Hotel sales? Yes, they sell hotels there. No they don't. I'm talking about the sale we went to today where they sold items from a closed hotel. My sister lives in the area and told us about it and she had me at "big baking sheets".

We went today and I scored a few of them as well as some heavy duty baking tools. All under $20. Nice.

Too bad I couldn't buy one of the pianos. Or a chandelier.

Being grateful - 20120531

I am grateful for Unblock Me.

I'm addicted, as you can see from my 200th game. I just got this (nerdy) app too. It also helps me pass the time during feedings.

I would like to have a reason to wear things like this on my head

Or well, I guess I could just do it, right?

Crystal vs. Natalie

I've been having thoughts about growing my hair long. Like LONG. Like LLLLLLLLONG. But this odd stage in the growing process is making me think more about chopping it off, or better yet, shaving it again. Just the thought sends shivers screaming "Freedom" down my spine!

I find myself thinking about all the fun things I could do with my hair being long again, and then reality sets in and I remember that on many days, I just threw it up into a ponytail and couldn't care less. Or on hot, humid days, it'd get all frizzy and the only thing I could do to calm it was to douse it in gel and be a sticky, sweaty greaseball all day.

But then when I was bald, or even when I had really short hair, I used to look at long hair and wish I could do something with mine.

Can't win!!

So what's it gonna be, long or short?!

Dream kitchen

Other than the obvious stuff I'd like in my dream kitchen (they are obvious, right?), I'd also like some bright, pretty casseroles and dishes. Just like healthy food, I'd like bright colours surrounding me and I think food looks good when there are bright colours associated with it. (But food also looks best when plated on a clean, white dish. I know, that's sorta contradictory, but we have a TON of white dishes, so I'm not writing about those.)

What's in your bag?

I got the idea for this post from Shai. Thanks!

So, about my bag. I'm a Just-In-Case/You-Never-Know packer. I always try to pack as much as I can in my bag because you really do never know if you or someone you're with will need this or that. And, I have something against space in my bag, apparently.

As a result, my bag is always heavy. The Aussie (i.e. my sister; those of you who know her will sorta get the reference) used to say that I'm so short because my backpack in elementary school was so heavy, it stunted my growth. I wouldn't be surprised if she's right. My Dad offers to carry my bag every so often and briefly lectures me every time about why I shouldn't carry so much around. Brother and Mr.S ask me what's in my bag and I always respond, "my life".

Back to school randomosities

Yes, it's a word. I said so.

Like many kids on a day like today, my mind is all over the place. I thought I'd jot some of these thoughts down for fun.

Cityline

There isn't much on TV these days, especially during the day. Reruns of reruns of reruns. I need to crack open a book, seriously.

I'm watching Cityline right now, and Sandra Pittana is on. She drives me crazy. Sometimes when I see her on the show, I wanna take duct tape and tape her mouth shut. I apologize for the hostility. It's also got to do with the fact that she almost hit me with her car. ("Almost" as in missed me by about 5 cm.)

Seriously, she did. She was on her phone about to make a right turn into my face. When she realized that she almost hit me, she sorta just stared at me, shocked. And then I just stared at her back, wanting her to remember my face so that she'd never talk on her phone and drive again. And then I continued crossing the street to my doctor's office.

So you can understand why I'm planning to change the channel.

Just for the sake of blogging

Pardon me, in advance, if this runs on and on and I talk about nothing and everything in particular. I feel like writing a post, but I don't have the inspiration to write about anything specific. Maybe I'll do this in point form. Yes. That seems satisfactory.
  • Right now, Mr. S is disassembling his workout bench in the baby's room. Hurrah! Goodbye Gym. Hello Nursery!
  • We have both too much "stuff" and too little storage space. If you ever experience the horror of being in our garage, please divert your attention away from our box farm. Looking at this side of the garage would convince you that we were in the process of a move in or a move out, but we're in neither.
  • I wonder how quickly, after delivery, I will gain back feeling in my right middle and ring fingers (they've had "pins and needles" for around 4 months).
  • I pray that after delivery, I won't have to wear this stupid Tensor Band around my wrist for long (stuff in my wrist has swollen and now stuff is rubbing together that shouldn't rub together and the rubbing and snapping and stuff is making it sore and painful to move).
  • "Stuff" is a very versatile word.
  • We're in the market for plug-in nightlights. I just found these and I'm tempted to convince Mr. S that they're an even cooler idea.
  • I miss loving Brian McKnight.
  • "Shutter Island" looks so intriguing. I'm too afraid to watch it though. I wonder if sitting in fear is labour-inducing.
  • I want something carbonated and sweet so badly, even PEPSI is tempting. (Ew.)
  • I fell asleep while watching the Grammys last week -- I'm not sure if this one was presented off-air or when I was sleeping. Either way I missed it and I'm so ashamed to say it!
    Best Urban/Alternative Performance
Looks like it was off-air, pre-show
  • I'm almost as curious about my post-pregnancy body as I am about what this child looks like. I have both horror images and fantasy images in my head (of my body).
  • Every year, after the superbowl, I tell myself that I should watch throughout the season...and then I don't. Regardless, I love watching football. I wish I could play it. Or, well, I wish someone would play with me. I think I'm cheering for the Saints...but that might just be because Ellen Degeneres convinced me to.
  • That's all for now. I have to go make our superbowl tacos.

I'm Stumped

I've got 46.....

I'm Stumped

My brother gave this to me to check out and I've got 42/50. Gaaaaah!!

FB: a love/hate relationship

My name is Katrina and I’m a Facebookaholic.

I love FB. I hate FB. I love connecting with people I haven’t heard from in a while. I hate that my curiousity and what I don’t want to call nosiness drives me to dig deeper into people’s profiles to find out what they’ve been up to since we last contacted each other. I love that I have all this information at my fingertips. I hate that I keep logging in every time I’m bored or feel like I’ve finished the internet. I love that there’s always something to do on there to keep me slightly entertained, even if it’s to find out that if I were a shoe, I’d be a ballet flat. I hate that every time I do have something to do there, it gets posted on my wall and everyone then knows just how bored I am (and I know I can change this on my wall settings, but I feel like I need some variety on my wall instead of status update after status update). I love that I can post pictures on there and limit views and that I can see my friends’ pictures. I hate that sometimes there aren’t any pictures I haven’t seen indicating that I have "finished" Facebook. I love being a part of just one social network. I hate that I’m addicted to it.

In short, I need to do more so I’m not so bored that I run to FB for amusement, and while I know I don't have it in me to just deactivate it and cut it off cold turkey (dang, those of you who do are STRONG!), I think I’ll limit my activity on there for now. WIsh me luck!

It’s, Its...

It’s = It is, e.g: It’s time to run.
Its = possession, e.g. The car lost its bumper in the accident.

Is it grammatically incorrect to use “it’s” for "it has"? e.g. It’s been 3 days since I saw you. Because if so, I’m guilty. GASP!

(Also, there's this but I'm not sure how reliable it is.)

Notes to myself

You know how people say, “Note to self:…” and then make a mental note? Well, I actually make notes to myself. I’m sure many other people do too. I find it helps me, especially as a Forgetful Jones (remember him?). Most of the time though, they’re on my phone. So, you can imagine that when my phone was out of commission, I was a mess. I had Post-Its all over my desk, maximized my use of reminders on Outlook (a new one every few minutes. It was driving me crazy to have all these blinking screens on my monitor), tied something around my finger (yes, I actually do that), wrote things down on garbage receipts in my purse…it was a mess. Only recently did I notice that I still had a crapload of these reminders in my purse still and on my computer at work…I should probably delete/dispose of them already.

DST

Is anyone else knocked out by the “Spring Forward” of Daylight Savings Time? I had just adjusted from pacific time to eastern time and now I have to go back an hour and readjust. Does it ever end? I’m tired of being tired! And, I really could have used that hour for recovery since I’m feeling bogged down by coughs, colds and stomach episodes. Bah.

I already have plans for the Fall Back. Husband and I plan to stay up and watch TV to see what happens to the time slots. What time do they consider the extra slot to be? Do they re-air shows in that extra hour? Do they air something totally different for that extra time slot? So many questions!

If you know, don’t tell us because we wanna find out ourselves. I’m sure it says it somewhere on the Internet, but we’d rather do this the old-fashioned way. He’s thought about it for years but never discovered it successfully (i.e. he fell asleep), so we’re going to motivate each other to stay awake and discover it together.

Haha

As you already know, the world wide web is not a very easy place to communicate sarcasm and tone. Since most of the time, I’m not serious (some of you may not agree with that statement, which, okay fine, I understand), I find it challenging when I want to joke around but I’m not sure it’ll be clear when I type it all out.

So what do I do?

Follow all statements with “Haha” or some form of it, like “Heehee” or “LOL!”. (Note: sometimes I don’t actually laugh out loud. Sorry!)

I think I do it too much. Sometimes every other line in an email or a Messenger window ends with “Haha”. It’s probably obvious sometimes when I am joking, but I find myself wanting to make sure the recipient of the message knows that I’m joking, just to avoid confusion.

There’s also the case of the happy face. I definitely over use that too. I think I'm a huge "facial expressioner" in person, so when I type, I find I need to add emoticons.

I also use “j/k”. I think subconsciously I like to use it because it's mine and hubby's initials. Just kidding (note that I typed that out, and didn't use "j/k").

Maybe I should just pretend that people understand what I’m saying. Or maybe I should stop being sarcastic. Or maybe I should stop joking...

:D
Haha!

Because 25 isn't enough...here's the real list

So for those of you on Facebook, this note with 25 random facts about yourself has been circulating and since I learned about it, I had been compiling a list mentally so that when I was lucky enough to get tagged, I'd be ready...and then when I got tagged, I couldn't remember all the things I had thought of.

Here's what my note said:
1. I love these things.

2. I am incapable and not quite willing to write short emails. I'm an elaborator. Same goes with texting -- I avoid abbreviations as much as I can. This could get long.

3. I have a fat deposit on my left eye that I've had since birth. It makes my iris look like it's dented. If next time we see each other, you're not listening to me and staring at my eye, I'll understand.

4. I have a bad habit of peeling my lip when I'm stressed. For me, stress leads to dehydration which leads to very chapped lips. I know, gross.

5. My marriage is the best thing in the whole wide world for me right now, and it helps that my husband just as crazily in love with me as I am with him. Every day is a good day when I wake up next to my best friend.

6. You can tell I'm a little off if I'm venting and if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time, I will claim you as my victim...lend me your ears (or eyes if we're on Messenger!).

7. If I share one of my recipes with you, consider yourself special. I don't do it often.

8. My favourite number is 5.

9. I live with two of my bestest friends, the two men who know me best. That said, I don't often get my way. e.g. I haven't seen Jon & Kate Plus 8 in weeks!

10. I don't play very many sports, but I run.

11. Sometimes I wish I was a real jock of a male quarterback so that ANYONE would play football with me.

12. I give myself projects every year. So far, I haven't not completed one.

13. Since I was younger, I've sorta shied away from doing things that involve people watching me, especially if I'm not sure what I'm doing, like video games or karaoke. The only exception was hula.

14. I get bored easily.

15. I tend to daydream at least once a day about what it would be like if I won a large sum of money.

16. I have VERY vivid dreams. I wish I could sleep more and live in them sometimes. As of late, they've been of my kids, who seem to be getting older every time I dream of them.

17. I'm a lover of change and I never make small ones. I like them in BIG batches.

18. I am passionate about God, spirituality, my family and bestfriends, running and fitness, cooking and baking and anything related to homemaking, being creative, being green, humanitarianism AND...grammar. (And I do realize that was a horrible sentence just as is this one.)

19. I turn my bad days around. It's pretty easy after some practise.

20. I feed off of positivity and I hope I ooze it too.

21. I love blogging.

22. I'm all about and all for moving forward.

23. My family can never be big enough, and I'm so excited to make some additions myself.

24. I must like water. I once dunked my head in a toilet (I was a kid). On another occasion, apparently I could have drowned and when I was pulled out, I was just fine. I have days where I wish I could stay in the shower all day long. One of the things I look forward to after a long run is soaking in ice water.

25. I have a severe case of do-it-yourself-itis, and I never want to be cured.

26. My second toes are not only taller than my big toes, they're also just about as long as my pinky.

27. I have a huge dream of going to Africa to do some serious volunteer work for months. One day I'll actually pursue it.

28. I prefer to spend money on lots of nice things on sale than one big and/or expensive thing, unless I've saved up for it.

29. I don't think I could ever grow my eyebrows back completely for the purpose of reshaping them, because some of the hairs just won't grow back.

30. I have an obsession with all things Dyson...I just learned they don't just make vaccuums.

31. I love holding hands. When I was younger and I saw couples holding hands, I thought it was the most romantic thing ever.

32. I knew I was going to marry my husband when I was 15. We started going out when we were 16.

33. I used to call those tin containers that small tarts come in "Fevers". I'm not sure why. My Mom never corrected me though.

34. I stopped watching horror movies after I moved out of my parents' house. Even the word "horror" looks scary.

35. I hate garden gnomes. They are the freakiest little buggers anyone could add to their garden and they're also really stupid-looking.

36. The first movie that ever made me cry was "Harry and the Hendersons".

37. I've never smoked/sniffed/injected anything. I'm a rare breed these days.

38. I think I could be fluent in French if I wasn't so self-conscious.

39. The list of things I liked about university is a hundred times shorter than the list of things I didn't like about university. I think I was just in the wrong program for too long. Then I got a kick-ass Intro to Soc mark which my prof held hostage because he wanted to put a face to grade. After that, I found my double major and things started to look up.

40. I don't like asking for things. I'm too independent or stubborn sometimes.

41. If I had known that telling your parents you might want to be a doctor is mistake number one in being a child, I never would have done it.

42. For the most part, I've mastered the art of stinkless silent farts. Chances are, I've farted right beside you and you don't even know it.

43. I have a fascination with fake hair.

44. Apparently, I had a heart murmur in my teens. I have no idea what happened to it.

45. I have around 4 alarms to wake me up in the morning, and I still only manage to wake up 30 minutes before I have to leave.

46. When I have kids, I plan to always have cookie dough made and ready to ball and pop in the oven. I wonder if they'll be fat.

47. When I graduated from high school, the teacher announcing my name (who I had known since 9th grade) said "Sarah CHRISTINA..." I don't know why I walked up to receive my "diploma" after he said that.

49. I sometimes wish I didn't sell my Calculus text book from 1st year. I have cravings for math.

50. My very first memory is waking up one morning before my parents, in my crib, and seeing the blue curtains in their bedroom sway from either a fan or an open window.

51. I could read other people's 25 things for hours. Meanwhile I have 2 books waiting to be read.

52. Honestly, they're not as big as you think. And I think I'm willing to lose a bit of them for the sake of personal fitness and strength.

53. I'm not pregnant, but I'll keep you posted.

54. When the Mini came out in North America, I really wanted one because I felt that if I was a car, I'd be a Mini. (But when I'm feeling really good, I'm an Audi TT hahahaha).

55. I really really really really REALLY try to be the change I want to see in the world.

56. I don't do the horoscope/sign/astrology thing.

57. HONESTLY, my dream car is a van. (Stop laughing at me.)

58. Having a bladder that is efficient for a 10 year old but being over twice that age, I can pee for an exceptionally long time.

59. Wedding talk makes my hands sweat from excitement. I was dehydrated for most of our engagement. (My hands just started sweating.)

60. I spend Thursdays analyzing the Lost episode of the night before until my head literally hurts.

61. I wish I could travel more, but I'm okay with putting it off for later.

62. My hair is both straight and wavy. Most days, I go for straight.

63. My husband promised to do a 25 Things if I tagged him and he has no idea what to write, meanwhile I've got 25 Things for him in a file on my desktop.

64. Among the many things I wanted to be when I grow up, when I was a kid, I thought I wanted to be a model. Obviously, I'm not, but one of my best friends is and I love her pics. (I also hoped to be a house wife.)

65. Seriously, I have to stop.

Hair

I am definitely not one for keeping my hair constant. I’m sure I’ve blogged about this before.

I’m a fan of change, especially when it comes to my hair. I don’t like to keep it the same way for long and if it’s starting to look like it’s growing, chances are, I have no idea what I’m doing with it next, and I’m probably not growing it for some special occasion (I got married already, remember?) unless I have to. My hair has a tendency to look the same whatever cut it is. I’m not sure why. Maybe because it’s so thick? But any time, it’s short, it looks the same whenever it’s short even if it’s a different cut. Any time it’s long, it looks the same whatever the cut. Only when it’s REALLY short does it look different sometimes.

I’ve been having this debate with myself about whether to grow it or cut it, dye it or leave it, do something or do nothing. I’ve come to the conclusion that even if I did grow it for the purposes of doing all sorts of fun things with it, I don’t really have the time to play. (You should see my hair right now – 4 braids in no particular organized sections of my head and then because the ends are all sticking out, it’s rolled up and tucked under a clip…and yes it looks just as ugly as you’re imagining it is. I didn’t have time to make it look pretty…I’m a wash and go/wash and sleep girl.)

So, I’m cutting it. I will cut it myself instead of going somewhere and paying someone to do whatever they want because I have no idea what it is I want.

I’ll let you know how it goes.

So here's what's transpired, but first, this is my response to Joyce's comment...

Some short styles...

Some curly...

And long

And for fun!

But this is what I went with...

Don't mind the post-work hair...

Telephone Etiquette

Have you ever noticed how much your voice changes depending who you’re talking to or what you’re talking about? For me, when I’m talking to friends or family, I tend to talk quickly and loudly because well, I’m excited. For work, I’m usually more quiet, my voice lowers for some reason if it’s serious, or I’m my usual self if I’m talking to members who know me and who I know and I’m more professional – or at least I try to be. For telemarketers (although I don’t have this problem anymore, thanks to the Do Not Call list!), I’m quick and polite…but blunt – as in, I hang up the phone after I’m done speaking. I know it’s rude, but when I say I’m not interested and they don’t listen, that’s rude too.

Something else that could be considered rude or poor telephone etiquette is talking at the same time as the person on the other end. Usually the concept of the exchange is pretty simple – You talk, I talk, You talk again, and then I talk again, and so on. BUT, do you notice that towards the end of the conversation, it’s not such a big deal? We can often say “Thank you” and “Bye” or “Have a good day” at the same time, and it’s fine.

Have you ever done one of these?

Me: Hi _______, how are you?
Other: Oh I’m good, how about you?
Me: Good! How’re you?

Duuuuuuh…is it obvious that I’m not really paying attention and that I guess I don’t care enough about how you’re doing to listen to what just happened? Honestly, I do care, but I must be really distracted.

How about this?

…approaching end of conversation of a call where I called someone…
Other: Okay, well, I gotta get going. Thanks for calling!
Me: You too!

Uhhhh…OOPS. I tend to do that when I’m thinking that they’ve said something like “Have a good day” or “Take care”.

I’m such an idiot on the phone sometimes. I need to stop multi-tasking so much.
