How much I need India.Arie

Yes, I realize that this is my third post referencing India. I will openly admit that in my dramaless and drama-attracting-less life, I’m going through some things and I’m finding that in all this haze, India and her music are proving to be a huge inspiration in a somewhat inspiration-lacking time.

I think if I wanted to be one those people who would write a singer about how much their music has changed and helped them through life, she’d be my first choice (Cece Winans at a close second). Her music feels like a nice cleanse and comes just in time when things seem a little grim.

I sit here, somewhat robotic, on a grey Friday morning, while these earbuds that seem to cancel out all noise simultaneously stretch out my small ear canals, and am reminded that yes, This Too Shall Pass.

He heals me

One of my faves on the album so far...

He Heals Me

Told him my biggest secret
And he told me four.
He smiled at me and said that makes me love you more
And then he made me laugh
And I knew it was a sign
That he was a man,
That I wanted in my life

And with every passing day
I feel more and more of that way

He heals me
He knows the real me
And he accepts me, he never hurts me
He heals me
He knows the real me
And he accepts me, he never hurts me
He heals me,
He heals me

I can play him songs, all through the night,
And he will listen to every line,
And even when I’m wrong, he is still kind
He chooses his words wisely when he tells me I’m not right.

And yes he is a beautiful man,
But he is also a beautiful friend

He heals me
He knows the real me
And he accepts me, he never hurts me
He heals me
He knows the real me
And he accepts me, he never hurts me
He heals me,
He heals me

The moment that we met, he made me smile.
He has so much compassion in his eyes
I have no idea, how long he’ll be here
A season or a lifetime, forever or a year
But for the first time in my life I’m not worried about the future
Because we have such a wonderful time when we’re together
However things turn out, it’s all right
Cause he’s already changed my life.

He heals me
He knows the real me
And he accepts me, he never hurts me
He heals me
He knows the real me
And he accepts me, he never hurts me
He heals me...

Vday came early!!

It all started this morning, on our day off (our flight leaves tonight). We decided we'd go out this morning, run some last minute errands and maybe catch a matinee flick.

I decided outloud that I would buy the new India Arie album. YAY!!

About 15 minutes later, he said, "I have something for you..." after which I ran around the house, looking, just about to tear up his nicely-packed suitcase. (Note: this is normal behaviour when I find out he "has something for me". I know. how chilidish.)

So then he told me where to find it...
In the second pocket...

In the bag...
...was India Arie's Testimony: Vol. 2 Love & Politics!!!!

India's my all-time fave...I've got all her albums, plus other singles (including the track she recorded for The Tyra Banks Show). She had me at "Brown skin...you know I love your brown skin..."

Thank you, Love!

We cracked

Husband and I have been on a no-take-out, no-restaurant policy since mid-January. I actually thought it was before then, but we realized we started a bit late. It was pretty much in an effort to eat more healthily, save money and most of all, to see how long we could last. Going out for lunch every so often or social outtings didn't count.

We cracked the other day and due to my laziness and lack of time to cook, and our need to finish dinner before the Lost recap and the new Lost episode, we opted for Hakka food.

Yum.

(Then it made me gassy at work the next day when I baoned it. LONG STORY.)

Our first Valentine's Day....

...what's that again? I'm married now, so we don't have those apparently. Remember last year's post? HAHAHA!!

TBC.

Heroezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

I have either really bad allergies (what I’m allergic to, I have no idea) or some serious sinus issues. I sneeze quite often. It drives me insane. So, yesterday, on a quick grocery run, I decided to try Benadryl, which many of my friends with allergies recommended, since other allergy medicines I’ve used either don’t work or make my stomach feel funny while nasal sprays I was prescribed were actually steroids, which I’ve been asked to refrain from as much as possible.

So last night, before dinner, I took one pill. I was kind of excited because I was hoping for a huge difference.

3/4 into dinner, I almost fell asleep in my bowl of noodles (Husband made dinner – YAY!). I finished up, struggling to keep my eyes open, and ended up on the couch. 5 minutes into Heroes, I was OUT.

I felt like a hippie in the 70s. It was soooooo trippy. 12 hours later, I’m still feeling drowsy and I’m hoping I can be super-productive today. Oh boy.

Any other suggestions for allergy meds? I think I might go herbal.

West SIIIIIIDE!

At the end of this week, I start what I’m calling “Treeh’s February West Coast Sweep”. I’ve had mixed feelings about the whole thing for a few months. In a span of 12 days, I’ll be going From Toronto to Las Vegas, Las Vegas to Toronto, Toronto to Vancouver, Vancouver to Toronto. If the second trip was for business and not pleasure, and if I had some money to burn, I’d skip the whole come back to Toronto thing and stay on the west coast. Not happening.

I’m excited because:
Las Vegas is a pleasure trip -- over the course of the 4 days and 4 nights I’m there,
  • I’ll be seeing my aunt and uncle, who weren't able to come for our wedding last summer
  • Doing Vegas for the first time with people in my generation (the other two times were with my parents)
  • I’ll be adding another run to my list of “Destination Runs” (cheers to a run on the strip at dawn! Too bad I can’t take it to the desert!)
  • It’s my first vacation with my in-laws
  • Husband and I get to tack on another vacation to our what-will-be-long list of vacations
  • Best of all, I’ll be coming back with a new sister (my brother-in-law is getting married)

Vancouver is a business trip – over the 3 days and 2 nights I’m there,
  • I’ll get to see my cousin and her family who immigrated to Toronto a few years back and made their way to the west coast
  • It’s a free trip :)
  • I’ll enjoy seeing variations in elevation! (I love seeing the mountains!)
  • I’ll get to do some “road tripping” with my sister
  • I still have free long distance on my cell phone so I can call home whenever I want

I’m not-so-excited because:
  • I don’t do well with jet lag
  • I’m not a gambler and I’m trying to avoid shopping
  • It’s not as warm as I thought this time of year would be in Vegas
  • I have to pack sweaters, which takes away from packing shoes (hahaha!)
  • I’m gonna be sleeping alone in Vancouver for the first time since I’ve been married :(
  • I’m not gonna get to drive down to see my sister and her family…but I’ll be seeing some of them the week after! :)
  • I’m looking at Vancouver flights and they’re looking at late, grim landing times in Toronto…I’m praying for a free day off the following day. Haha! Not bloody likely though.

I’m totally bracing myself. Ugh, it’ll pass. But you know, only good comes out of both of these trips, so I'm just gonna suck it up.

West coast, HERE I COME!

THE Coolest Thing

A few nights ago, while out for dinner with my BGFs, I stumbled upon the most exquisite thing. It was so amazing, I took pictures of it with my phone.

Enter: The Dyson Airblade.
How awesome is that? There are hand dryers like this in Japan, but this one is better because 1. It's a DYSON, DUH! and 2. It does just as it claims -- it will dry your hands in 12 seconds. Oh oh oh!! AND, it uses 80% less energy than other hand dryers! To see it in action, click here. I dare you to lie to me and tell me you're not fascinated.

I really hope Dyson delves into innovation of other really cool items. I think all it'd take is for James Dyson to be disappointed with another product and we're covered.

Because 25 isn't enough...here's the real list

So for those of you on Facebook, this note with 25 random facts about yourself has been circulating and since I learned about it, I had been compiling a list mentally so that when I was lucky enough to get tagged, I'd be ready...and then when I got tagged, I couldn't remember all the things I had thought of.

Here's what my note said:
1. I love these things.

2. I am incapable and not quite willing to write short emails. I'm an elaborator. Same goes with texting -- I avoid abbreviations as much as I can. This could get long.

3. I have a fat deposit on my left eye that I've had since birth. It makes my iris look like it's dented. If next time we see each other, you're not listening to me and staring at my eye, I'll understand.

4. I have a bad habit of peeling my lip when I'm stressed. For me, stress leads to dehydration which leads to very chapped lips. I know, gross.

5. My marriage is the best thing in the whole wide world for me right now, and it helps that my husband just as crazily in love with me as I am with him. Every day is a good day when I wake up next to my best friend.

6. You can tell I'm a little off if I'm venting and if you're in the wrong place at the wrong time, I will claim you as my victim...lend me your ears (or eyes if we're on Messenger!).

7. If I share one of my recipes with you, consider yourself special. I don't do it often.

8. My favourite number is 5.

9. I live with two of my bestest friends, the two men who know me best. That said, I don't often get my way. e.g. I haven't seen Jon & Kate Plus 8 in weeks!

10. I don't play very many sports, but I run.

11. Sometimes I wish I was a real jock of a male quarterback so that ANYONE would play football with me.

12. I give myself projects every year. So far, I haven't not completed one.

13. Since I was younger, I've sorta shied away from doing things that involve people watching me, especially if I'm not sure what I'm doing, like video games or karaoke. The only exception was hula.

14. I get bored easily.

15. I tend to daydream at least once a day about what it would be like if I won a large sum of money.

16. I have VERY vivid dreams. I wish I could sleep more and live in them sometimes. As of late, they've been of my kids, who seem to be getting older every time I dream of them.

17. I'm a lover of change and I never make small ones. I like them in BIG batches.

18. I am passionate about God, spirituality, my family and bestfriends, running and fitness, cooking and baking and anything related to homemaking, being creative, being green, humanitarianism AND...grammar. (And I do realize that was a horrible sentence just as is this one.)

19. I turn my bad days around. It's pretty easy after some practise.

20. I feed off of positivity and I hope I ooze it too.

21. I love blogging.

22. I'm all about and all for moving forward.

23. My family can never be big enough, and I'm so excited to make some additions myself.

24. I must like water. I once dunked my head in a toilet (I was a kid). On another occasion, apparently I could have drowned and when I was pulled out, I was just fine. I have days where I wish I could stay in the shower all day long. One of the things I look forward to after a long run is soaking in ice water.

25. I have a severe case of do-it-yourself-itis, and I never want to be cured.

26. My second toes are not only taller than my big toes, they're also just about as long as my pinky.

27. I have a huge dream of going to Africa to do some serious volunteer work for months. One day I'll actually pursue it.

28. I prefer to spend money on lots of nice things on sale than one big and/or expensive thing, unless I've saved up for it.

29. I don't think I could ever grow my eyebrows back completely for the purpose of reshaping them, because some of the hairs just won't grow back.

30. I have an obsession with all things Dyson...I just learned they don't just make vaccuums.

31. I love holding hands. When I was younger and I saw couples holding hands, I thought it was the most romantic thing ever.

32. I knew I was going to marry my husband when I was 15. We started going out when we were 16.

33. I used to call those tin containers that small tarts come in "Fevers". I'm not sure why. My Mom never corrected me though.

34. I stopped watching horror movies after I moved out of my parents' house. Even the word "horror" looks scary.

35. I hate garden gnomes. They are the freakiest little buggers anyone could add to their garden and they're also really stupid-looking.

36. The first movie that ever made me cry was "Harry and the Hendersons".

37. I've never smoked/sniffed/injected anything. I'm a rare breed these days.

38. I think I could be fluent in French if I wasn't so self-conscious.

39. The list of things I liked about university is a hundred times shorter than the list of things I didn't like about university. I think I was just in the wrong program for too long. Then I got a kick-ass Intro to Soc mark which my prof held hostage because he wanted to put a face to grade. After that, I found my double major and things started to look up.

40. I don't like asking for things. I'm too independent or stubborn sometimes.

41. If I had known that telling your parents you might want to be a doctor is mistake number one in being a child, I never would have done it.

42. For the most part, I've mastered the art of stinkless silent farts. Chances are, I've farted right beside you and you don't even know it.

43. I have a fascination with fake hair.

44. Apparently, I had a heart murmur in my teens. I have no idea what happened to it.

45. I have around 4 alarms to wake me up in the morning, and I still only manage to wake up 30 minutes before I have to leave.

46. When I have kids, I plan to always have cookie dough made and ready to ball and pop in the oven. I wonder if they'll be fat.

47. When I graduated from high school, the teacher announcing my name (who I had known since 9th grade) said "Sarah CHRISTINA..." I don't know why I walked up to receive my "diploma" after he said that.

49. I sometimes wish I didn't sell my Calculus text book from 1st year. I have cravings for math.

50. My very first memory is waking up one morning before my parents, in my crib, and seeing the blue curtains in their bedroom sway from either a fan or an open window.

51. I could read other people's 25 things for hours. Meanwhile I have 2 books waiting to be read.

52. Honestly, they're not as big as you think. And I think I'm willing to lose a bit of them for the sake of personal fitness and strength.

53. I'm not pregnant, but I'll keep you posted.

54. When the Mini came out in North America, I really wanted one because I felt that if I was a car, I'd be a Mini. (But when I'm feeling really good, I'm an Audi TT hahahaha).

55. I really really really really REALLY try to be the change I want to see in the world.

56. I don't do the horoscope/sign/astrology thing.

57. HONESTLY, my dream car is a van. (Stop laughing at me.)

58. Having a bladder that is efficient for a 10 year old but being over twice that age, I can pee for an exceptionally long time.

59. Wedding talk makes my hands sweat from excitement. I was dehydrated for most of our engagement. (My hands just started sweating.)

60. I spend Thursdays analyzing the Lost episode of the night before until my head literally hurts.

61. I wish I could travel more, but I'm okay with putting it off for later.

62. My hair is both straight and wavy. Most days, I go for straight.

63. My husband promised to do a 25 Things if I tagged him and he has no idea what to write, meanwhile I've got 25 Things for him in a file on my desktop.

64. Among the many things I wanted to be when I grow up, when I was a kid, I thought I wanted to be a model. Obviously, I'm not, but one of my best friends is and I love her pics. (I also hoped to be a house wife.)

65. Seriously, I have to stop.

Mr. Walter Bishop

Tuesday nights are Fringe nights. I've been watching it since the series started and I love that I can watch this and be totally consumed by the craziness that is this show and the fact that Fringe is a longer than usual show and so it has very little commercials. BUT, what I really enjoy is John Noble's one outrageous line per episode as Dr. Walter Bishop.

Here are a few for your amusement:

"I've never seen a feature like this before. It warms your ass. It's wonderful, have you tried it?"

"The only thing better than a cow is a human! Unless you need milk. Then you really need a cow."

"Excellent! Let's make some LSD!"

"I just pissed myself...Just a squirt."

"Apparently people don't like to shop when they feel like their going to throw up.."

"To understand what happened at the diner we'll use Mr Papaya. This is upsetting, because he is the friendliest of fruits"

"I just got an erection... Don't worry, it's got nothing to do with your state of undress. I simply need to urinate."

UFC

If you know me, you know I’m not a violent person…and so you also know that fighting, even WWE stuff, makes me cringe. When I watched The Wrestler, I skipped all the wrestling scenes and when the movie was over, I was sick…probably more due to the shaky filming and possible stomach flu than the actual wrestling, but yeah.

So anyway, Saturday night ended up being a night I totally didn’t imagine on Saturday morning, or heck on any day. After an unusual sequence of events (*unusual meaning that this has never happened before), the UFC fight was on our television. We had some of our closest friends over, whom we hadn’t seen in a while and whom we’ve missed, and since most of them are UFCers who didn’t have a place to watch, we put our money together and ordered some food and the fight.

OMG, UFC never again. Hahahaha! I’ve never watched a UFC fight, nor have I ever had any interest in it, aside from watching Monica Gellar’s boyfriend wanting to be the Ultimate Fighting Champion in Friends. Despite my fear, nausea and detest, I found myself sitting there all the way to the end of the main event, peaking through the fingers that sorta covered my eyes. I didn’t wanna watch and I wanted to see it end…and how it would end. Ugh, the moral dilemma! Then, the feelings came back from when husband-then-fiance and I watched some muay thai live in Thailand...ugh, I wanted to cry, seriously. Stop laughing at me!

But yeah, in short, that UFC stuff just isn’t for me, which I already knew. We can definitely do it again, but I think I’ll watch a movie upstairs while it’s on.
